John, the founder of First Down Promotions, Inc., has made the transition from a successful athlete to the head of a firm that does over a million dollars in annual revenues. A closer look at his spectacular athletic career gives some idea of John's wil to succeed in all areas of his life.

As one of the rare athletes in high school who excels at football, basketball, and baseball. John was very highly touted his junior and senior years. In 1982, his football accomplishments brought John the distinction of being named the USA Today Football Player of the Year. In 1983, his basketball instincts resulted in All-State basketball honors while being the key member on the Menlo School State Basketball Championship Team. Also in 1983, John showed he was gifted enough baseball player to be drafted straight out of high school by the San Francisco Giants.

Upon graduation from Menlo High School, John chose to attend Stanford University on a football scholarship. From 1983 to 1987, he excelled both academically and athletically. In addition to pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics, John was a three-year letterman as point guard on the basketball team and an academic All-American candidate as a quarterback on the football team. A four-year starter at quarterback, John was team captain during the 1986 season when the Cardinals were ranked 16th nationally and appeared in the Gator Bowl. Continuing Stanford's rich quarterback tradition, John left Stanford the second all-time career passing yardage leader, behind perennial All-Pro John Elway. John set records that include most completions (271) in a single season, most attempts (405) in a single season, and most completions (40) in a single game. John was inducted into the Stanford University Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.

After an impressive career at Stanford, John was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 1987. With the Niners, John was a member of the two-time NFC Western Division Champions and Super Bowl XXIII Champions team. After three years as a backup for future Hall-of-Famer Joe Montana and All-Pro Steve Young, John was forced to retire from professional football in 1989 due to complications from shoulder surgery. In 1991, John's home county recognized his past accomplishments and welcomed him to its family of successful business people when he was elected to the San Mateo County Hall of Fame.

Through John’s work with First Down Promotions, he remains active in athletics, albeit in more instructive capacity. Divisions of First Down Promotions provide youth sports instruction in both basketball and volleyball. John organizes and coordinates in excess of 20 AAU youth basketball teams each year. His sports facility provides year round basketball activities with camps, clinics, tournaments. John oversees the activities and coaches multiple teams throughout the years. Since 1987, John has coached girl's basketball team at Menlo School in Atherton, CA and has taken them on a most impressive run. Under John's tutelage, the girls won an unprecedented three straight California Division V State Championships (1989-1991). John also serves on the board of directors for the Redwood Chapter of the National Junior Basketball program, NJB. Through his various athletic programs and by example John continues to impart his ideas on teamwork and success to young athletes in the Bay Area.

First Down Promotions is proud to welcome you to another exciting year of the Benefit Basketball Association. This is the 20th year of the BBA and its "Score Points Against Drugs" program. During the first 19 years, the BBA has helped raise well over $3.0million for local schools, recreation programs, church groups, D.A.R.E., and police and fire departments across the nation.  We look forward to adding you to the list of over 500 satisfied organizations who have hosted BBA games. The BBA represents members of the twenty-three celebrity-packed NFL teams. Returning BBA teams include the Arizona Cardinals,  Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, Oakland Raiders, Saint Louis Rams, San Diego CHargers, San Francisco Forty Niners, Seattle Seahawks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  The BBA also features an NFL ALL-Star Team.

To host a Benefit Basketball Game, a host organization must first apply to receive a date on the BBA schedule.  A $50 non-refundable Application Fee must be submitted along with a completed Application Form.  After your application is received, your organization will be given a contract with the date and time of your Benefit Basketball game.  Once this contract is returned with the game fee, host organizations can begin to sell advertisements, sell tickets and promote the event.  The game fee is needed to secure your organization's game date and will be used to pay players who participate in your event and to produce posters, tickets and programs.  Information on each team's game fee can be obtained by reaching the First Down Office @ (650) 654-4444.  It only takes a little hard work to generate significant revenue.  In fact, over 97% of hosts put on successful BBA games over the past 19 years, averaging well over $2000 per game.  First Down Promotions has set up a high quality, professionally structured fund raiser which will provide organizations with the tools necessary to be successful.

Thanks, FirstDown Promotions

How Much revenue can we expect to make?
97% of host organizations have made money with their BBA event. It helps to have many helpers to solicit advertising from local businesses and sell tickets to local residents. While the average revenue is more than $2,000, some hard- working organizations have made in excess of $15,000!

Which NFL athlete's are playing in our game?
Unfortunately, because an NFL player's life is hectic, even during the off-season, First Down can not guarantee the NFL roster prior to the event.

Who can play against the NFL players?
The host team should consist of no more than 12 players with no player under the age of 18 years old. Otherwise, any person can suit up against the NFL players.

What other expenses might there be?
Generally, if the game site is over three hours away from the NFL team city, the host will be asked to provide travel arrangements for NFL players and First Down staff. If First Down staff must fly to the host city, the host will provide 50% of travel expenditures.

When do we get promotional items (tickets and posters)?
They will be sent via UPS after contract and game fee are received by First Down.

The current/former athletes will participate in a regular four quarter basketball game against a team that your organization would assemble.

These games are fun, exciting, and a pleasure to watch by all. Players interact with the crowd, make a few jokes, and some of them even play a little basketball!

Players are available to sign autographs at halftime and usually do so for approximately 15-20 minutes.

The games are sold as fundraisers to different communities. Ticket holders will be helping out a good cause and as a bonus, they will be treated to a great time by some of their favorite players!!

Bring your favorite team to a gym near you - raise money and help increase community awareness for your cause.
